We have hard wood floors in our stuido apartment and I had originally purchased a playpen/play yard which provided a small area for baby to play with toys and try rolling above ground level. As six months approached my baby was rolling all over my bed but it wasn't safe and when I checked into a forum I'm part of for moms and babies of similar ages...some of the other 6 months olds seemed a little more advanced in their movement. I didn't expect my son to be walking by 8 months but I wanted him to have plenty of room and opportunity to practice moving safely. Once I received the mats, my son began playing on them for up to 2 hours after his breakfast each morning...I place a variety of toys down and off he goes...he's days away from crawling now and can crawl backwards already! I've really seen his movement come on since allowing him to roll around on a larger floor area. I was originally looking for larger mats, but now I prefer having four smaller mats because I can use the velcro on them to specifically fit around the shape of my corner sofa and can change shapes. I wish I'd ordered a set of four mats at once (check the pricing to see if this is cheaper not sure if it is? - vendor should make this a cheaper option) I got red blue yellow and green mat and plan on using the colors for learning and games later..like 'hop on the blue mat'..etc. My mother was the principal of a special needs school and this reminded me of the set up she had for her kids (3-10yr olds) in the playroom at the school. This company specializes in special needs, my baby is 7 months and so far 'normal' but some of the special needs eqipment is just excellent for learning for the young in general. I was nervous about my son falling from a sitting up postiion back on his head on the mats as they seem quite firm, but he's done this a few times now and he's fine, the mat seems to support the fall so yes very safe. When you put the mats down move wires away from edges...my son can't crawl properly yet so my apartment is not baby proofed and I found that he's rolled off the mats onto the hard floor and was pulling on my cable tv wire! He seems to be fascinated by wires now! I gave 4 starts not five because although I think the product is excellent, it's a little pricey...but hey for those of you in NY it's a fraction of the price of 'renting a playroom in kidville'..which runs at around $600 or so..not sure for how many days, but that's ridiculous, all so you can access soft play on the upper west side! Sorry I digress...excellent product.
