By Sharon
I am a die-hard baby wearer, and this is by far my favorite carrier. I own or have owned nearly every type of carrier: pouch slings (like Hotslings, Peanut Shell, etc.), ring slings (Maya Wrap, Ellaroo), stretchy wraps (Moby), Mei Tais (Babyhawk, Ellaroo), and soft-structured carriers (Ergo, Beco, Angelpack, etc.). I have pretty much never met a carrier I didn't like. The Maya Wrap is, tied with the Ergo, my absolute favorite. While I sort of collect carriers, I could absolutely get by in any situation with a Maya and an Ergo. One thing that is REALLY important to know if you are browsing for carriers is that baby wearing is extremely personal, and what works for one person may not work for another person at all (and vice versa). The Maya Wrap is a ring sling, which is basically a really long piece of fabric pleated at the shoulder, with a pair of large rings to make a buckle. There is a learning curve with ring slings (and most other carriers). Please understand that this is NOT easy to use the first day you get it. You will have to practice. But once you figure it out, it's a breeze, and in fact, the easiest type of carrier to use and adjust.Essential functions of a safe baby carrier are:- support the baby's head and neck, if a newborn- position the baby's knees HIGHER than the bum (dangling from the crotch, as in a Bjorn, is not good for the spine and hips). The baby should be in a kind of frog position.- leave the baby's face entirely free to ensure good airflow (no fabric or padding in front of face)- hold the baby securely against the parent's body, with no hanging or swingingThe Maya Wrap, when used correctly, performs all of these essential functions and is a very simple and safe carrier. Some tips I've figured out over the years (yes, years, both of my children have pretty much lived in these things since birth):- For a newborn, you want to fold the fabric in half to create a little pouch to settle him into. Then follow directions below.- After you put the sling on, with the rings positioned high on the shoulder, put the baby where you want him. Don't even worry about the sling yet, just hold the baby against your body where you want him (tummy-to-tummy, or straddling your hip for an older baby, etc.). After the baby is positioned, then pull the fabric around his body. You want the bottom of the fabric under his bottom and knees (or pouch-style for a newborn). THEN, while holding the baby's weight in one arm, begin to tighten the fabric through the rings. ** THIS IS CRITICAL!!! HOLD THE BABY'S WEIGHT IN YOUR ARM AND SLOWLY PULL THE FABRIC THROUGH THE RINGS TO TIGHTEN!! ** Please, please, PLEASE, DO NOT use the rings as a pulley and attempt to hoist your dangling baby into position. It won't work and you will hate the sling and return it. Try to remember that the sling is not a seat into which you place your baby. The sling is a replacement for your own arms: it holds the baby against your body. So put your baby against your body and then use the sling to hold him there.- If a newborn, make sure the baby's head is turned to the side (face not squished against your chest; face needs to be free to breathe), then pull the fabric gently around the back of the head for support. For older babies, the fabric can go to the shoulders, or for a stable sitter, even below the armpits, leaving the arms free to pull your hair and pinch your nose.I hope that helps. The instructional video for this sling is really good, but I highly recommend that, if at all possible, you find someone who is familiar with ring slings to help you out the first few times. I can't stress enough that there is a learning curve, but it's totally worth it. I struggled by myself at first, my baby and I both in tears, until I finally figured it out (a couple of days later). But since then, it has been an invaluable tool that we use every day.If you decide that a ring sling is for you, this is the very best. Lightly padded shoulder for your comfort, but no padded sides (which are impossible to adjust through the rings, and make it bulkier to pack in a diaper bag). Breathable, flexible (but not stretchy) fabric. Any color you can dream of. I'd buy a dozen if I could afford to. :-)

By jenn01
I have a maya wrap and absolutely love it! I ordered this wrap as a gift for a friend. She is about 5'2 and my medium wrap seemed like the tail would be too long for her, so I ordered a small. The size chart recommends a small for a slender 5'2 and under and a medium for 5'2 to 5'9. Apparently the difference between the small and the medium is pretty significant. She says that the zipper on the pocket is higher than her elbow. I was really surprised at the huge difference between the medium and the small. If you or the person you are buying for is right around 5'2, I would definitely go with the medium.

By N. Talesa Patra
As a new mom, I have spent the last 2 months without a sling or wrap... thus not much got done around the house and something as simple as making a sandwich was nearly impossible because both my arms were always holding my son. After doing some research --- reading as well as talking to other moms --- I purchased this Maya wrap and it totally rocks! The sizing seems fairly accurate. I am only 5'0" so I purchased the Small size, which is perfect. It is very comfortable, so long as I am not layered up in thick clothing. My son loves it also, as it is very secure --- he feels secure, and I have the peace of mind knowing that he's not going to fall or roll out. I'm still mastering the various ways to hold him in it, but so far so good. My son loves it regardless of the position, and has fallen asleep in it many times. (Note that babies are individuals though, and not all will like this.)The padding is comfortable on my shoulder/back. My son is currently about 11 lbs, which would make my arms tired after a while. But in the sling, he feels like he's maybe only two-thirds the weight! It makes a HUGE difference. For first timers, I would suggest kneeling next to your bed with your baby, because it isn't always easy to get him/her into the sling. Most beds would be a good height if you're kneeling by it... plus, should you slip or lose your grip on your baby, at least the bed mattress is right there. The sling has also made it possible for me to use my arms and get stuff done around the house! I can even nurse him in it. What's even better is, because he is held close to my body, strangers are less likely to approach and try to touch him. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase.
