The Complete Air 65 SE Convertible Car Seat protects your child through two separate stages. In the rear-facing position, it works with the included infant body insert to fit babies as little as 5 pounds or 19 inches, so you can seat your child comfortably and safely in your car from the earliest stages of his or her life. The Complete Air 65 SE keeps your little one comfortable in a rear-facing position all the way until he or she reaches 40 pounds or 40 inches.
At that point, the Complete Air 65 SE switches to its second stage as a front-facing car seat, where it can accommodate children from 22 to 65 pounds or 34 to 52 inches. The price paid for this convertible car seat is exactly the kind of quality you'll receive. So whether or not it's a good or bad thing, at least in essence you get what you pay for.This "Safety 1st Complete Air 65 SE Protect Convertible Car Seat" is essentially the same product as the "Safety 1st Air Protect Complete Air SE Convertible Car Seat" which has been re-certified for a higher maximum weight of 65lbs.Coming from the Orbit Baby G2 Infant car seat (and American company) where every piece speaks of high-end quality from the solid plastic construction down to the foam and fabric that's certified Oeko-Tex Standard 100 (European organization) that's certified free of harmful substances and safe for your baby. I wanted to upgrade to the Orbit Baby G2 Toddler car seat, but it wasn't certified for Canadian use. So off I went looking for another car seat.After comparing high and low priced car seats from other reviewers as well as in stores, I set my eye on this Safety 1st Air Protect Complete SE Convertible Car Seat.PROS:1. Convertible usable from infants (rear facing) to toddlers (forward facing).2. Plush fabric.3. Ample padding from side to bottom.4. Side air protection that acts like an airbag and doubles as a head/neck support so the baby's head doesn't bend on the extreme sidewhen sleeping.5. 4-position recline (only for forward facing as rear-facing will have to recline it all the way down).6. Detachable cup holder.7. Good overall size for a convertible car seat that isn't compact, but isn't wide enough that it acts like it's occupying a width of a normal-sized adult.8. Relatively easy installation that will take minutes. First time installation of course will need a few minutes to familiarise yourself with the car seat construction. After that it's 5 minutes or less.9. Washable fabric.CONS:1. The 4-position recline is not flexible enough for a variety of vehicles when rear-facing. The manual suggests inserting a rolled towel if the rear recline isn't enough. If they knew this in the first place then they should have built the seat to recline even further according to their own recommendation.2. Plastic construction is rugged and corners are rough.3. Bottom plastic base is crude and not protected with any rubber material like in higher end car seats. This not only helps protect your leather car seats, but also acts as an added grip/anti-slip feature and bonds your car seat to the vehicle seat.4. Provided cup holder is not universal. It only attaches to the left side. The car seat is rear-facing right now and I chose to install it onthe right side so it helps me always load my child from the curb. The cup holder in this case protrudes such that I cannot close the door. Thus I cannot really use the cup holder until it is forward-facing. I called Safety 1st customer support and they strangely know about this and do not have any solution or cup holder made for the opposite side. Not even to buy as an accessory.The car seat has a provision on the right side. So it's weird and even idiotic for the manufacturers not to be able to offer a universal cup holder. Or even provide a cup holder for the right side. How much does this cheap plastic cost really once the mold has been done - cents!5. Fabric removal is archaic and held in place by pieces of garter and plastic tabs all around the rear of the seats that are sharp and can break - both garter fabric and plastic tabs.6. The car seat is packaged in the box with no internal plastic wrapping or foam protection to provide extra care during transport. The first seat I purchased I was disgusted this and returned it to the store thinking it was a returned item. Then I purchased it again and it's in the same condition. I called Safety 1st customer support to inquire about this and they said this was how they packed their car seats - with NO plastic wrap surrounding the car seats and protecting it from weather elements. The stroller and infant car seats I purchased from other manufacturer it was wrapped in plastic and completely sealed from the factory. No bed bugs from the store or any other bug or dust can get inside the car seat. In this case, you open the box and you have the car seat just there inside. Even the cup holder is placed there loosely juggling around.OVERALL:Like I said, the car seat is a good purchase for the price. It's features are commendable. However, installation and removal of fabric is designed with the manufacturer's ease first. Other manufacturer car seats were designed by parents for parents. I would suggest trying other car seats in person and asking to demo how to install the car seat as well as remove the fabric when needing to wash.If this is your target budget, it's the one I would recommend in this price range.
