Our hallways are 47"-48" wide and we needed to add 1x4 strips of wood on each side so that the gate could reach the latches properly. Yes, we tried fully extending the bolts to no avail. It's not pretty, but the price is ok, the gate holds up well, and it is otherwise a fairly elegant solution. On the bright side, the additional 1" spacer means that the gate won't likely bang against the wall when it swings open with typical force. This gate is very much like the Kidco Safeway Gate with some improvements in the latching mechanism (such that no lifting is required to close and the directional stopper can't be removed and become a choke hazard) and width adjustment mechanism (so that no unused drill holes are visible). I'm no expert in welding but I was surprised to see that the welds were just dabs on either side of each post and didn't go all the way around the metal posts where they contact the top and bottom bars. Oh well, it probably doesn't matter. In any case, although the gate is a metal construction, if you aren't careful, the top might latch but there is enough flexibility such that the bottom can still remain unlatched without an extra tug (either upwards to drop the gate in, or laterally further down one of the vertical bars).Update on 7/27/2012. Well, as soon as our #2 was able to climb, she climbed up onto the gate. After hanging there regularly/repeatedly, the small welded plate to which the latching bolt attaches came out of the top rail. I'm sure that hanging on a gate is not recommended but the gate design is perfect for that very activity by small toddlers. (It's not like I can do much about it while she stares at me sitting on the potty. :D) Surprisingly enough, the gate, albeit sagging, still does the job to this day. It is NOT at a stairwell so I simply pop the keyed plate and bolt back into the top rail and the gate holds (not only the latch, but my 20 lb toddler) just fine. We've been doing this for a few months now. Anyways, I definitely would not recommend for the top of the stairs unless you have some welding skills of your own.
