When I was growing up I recall an aunt who had a number of mechanical coin banks in which you placed the coin on a platform or on the hand of a character, you pressed a button and the mechanism ingested the coin in some comical manner. These were not electric banks, and some were quite old, but she still let me use them and I have fond memories of their action and how interesting I found them.Fast forward 30 years, and having not forgotten how much I liked mechanical banks as a kid, when I saw this bank I had to get it.You place a coin on the platform which has an image of a boned fish on it. Only a slight press is necessary to activate the bank. It "meows" and then the head pops up and the little paw come out and scoops the coin into the box. It "meows" a second time after the lid closes and the action is complete. Very fun!I wouldn't consider this a toy for small children, it is more of a novelty for older kids and adults who are kids at heart and who love cats. Both of my cats take notice when I use it. I'm not saying that the electronic "meow" is authenitic, but they do take notice.I wouldn't recommend storing a lot of coins in the bank. The coin storage area is not particularly large. Removing coins is fairly easy, remove the 1/4 turn lid on the bottom of the unit and tip it towards the corner where, the bottom emptying lid is located and the coins will typically just slide out. There is a power switch on the bottom of the unit, which is helpful to use when emptying it or when you are not actively using it.This bank is designed for coins that are a Quarter or smaller. DO NOT attempt to use the bank with Half Dollars or Dollar coins as the bottom emptying lid is not large enough to allow those coins to pass out of the bottom of the bank. For an inexpensive novelty gift, this bank is very interesting, very cute and well designed and should operate for a long time to come if treated well and not abused.
